Betty was in bad shape when found in the shelter. After being alone and stressed for so long, the poor girl didn’t know what to make of life. Not only that, but she was heavily pregnant. Within an hour of leaving the shelter, she had her pups! Betty couldn’t even wait to leave the car. The little mommy was skinny and shy. She was sweet, though. Not only that, but she was a terrific mother. At one point, a pup became sick and wouldn’t feed… But with mommy’s help, it made a triumphant comeback. Soon, he was fat and happy. The pups were growing quickly. Not only that, but they got tons of love (unlike what their experience would have been like in a shelter). Oh, what’s under there? PUPPIES! I want to kiss those wee paws. The happy, squir
Montreal Just Delivered A Death Sentence To Thousands Of Dogs No dog considered a pit bull can be adopted from shelters. City councilors in Montreal just signed a death warrant for thousands of dogs in the Canadian city. At a council meeting on Tuesday afternoon, legislators voted in 37 to 23 favor of breed specific legislation, effectively outlawing any dog that resembles a pit bull — unless owners meet a strict set of conditions. "I have a responsibility as the mayor of Montreal to protect the citizens," Mayor Denis Coderre told reporters after the vote. But pit bull-type dogs currently in city shelters need not apply. Under the ban — which loosely covers American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire bull terriers — no dog considered a pit bull can
Last weekend, Elmo the pit bull got sprung from the shelter for a couple of hours. He went to a park, where he made some friends and couldn't stop smiling. Elmo also checked out some historical sites around town, and wore this magnificent grin the whole time. "He even went to a local hair salon," Tori Fugate of KC Pet Project in Kansas City, Missouri, And by now you can probably guess how Elmo's sweet face looked there, too. But Elmo hasn't always worn such a happy expression. In mid-July, he and another dog were discovered abandoned in a yard. "We think that a neighbor probably noticed that the dogs were left there and called animal control to report them," Fugate The dogs — whose former owner hasn't been id
A Florida police officer discovered three Pit Bulls trapped inside of a sewer drain on the side of a busy highway. He immediately contacted rescuers to save the distressed pups. Police say it’s likely the dogs got into the sewer system through a manhole across the street. It does not appear that they were abandoned, but possibly escaped from their home. They are currently with Animal Services until their owners are located. The dogs are terrified and confused, but Pit bulls In Trouble Watch rescuers work their life-saving magic in the video below:

For a dog named Drove, the day felt like any other at the shelter. He lay on his comfy pillow, curled up in a nap, just like he had so many times in the past six months he'd been there. HUMANE SOCIETY OF MEMPHIS & SHELBY He couldn't possibly have known that this afternoon would be different — and that his new parents were waiting right outside to meet him. Drove came to the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby (HSM&S) in October after its cruelty investigator found him tied up in an abandoned house. The terrier mix, who's now 5, quickly became popular with the shelter staff. "One of my favorite things about him is how, if you're sitting there petting him and you stop, he'll nudge your hand to get you to keep petting him," Katie Pemberton, marketing and communication
Dogs can get overzealous — even competitive — with canine housemates when it comes to receiving an owner's attention or other good things, like toys and treats. An excited dog may unintentionally bulldoze other pets when he moves in to say hello or get a reward. But in many cases, an enthusiastic dog can be taught to patiently wait his turn for attention or treats. In our new video, trainer Mikkel Becker visits one home where this problem was playing out.
